Course Overview
Infection Prevention and Control is a QQI Level 5 Minor Award that is designed to provide the learner with the knowledge, skills, and competencies to prevent and control infection within the healthcare industry.
Learners will develop a better understanding of the basic principles of infection control and their application in the workplace, and an awareness of the essential role played by infection control.
Learners will also explore their responsibility towards ensuring the best evidence-based practice in their multidisciplinary healthcare team.
As part of this programme, learners will develop complete basic skills in relation to promoting good infection control practices and understand how infections develop, the signs and symptoms of infection, and ways to prevent infection spreading. The importance of their role in infection control management is explored and the factors that increase the susceptibility of individuals to develop infections are analysed.
Learners gain a basic understanding of the growth of microorganisms and factors that influence the growth and acquire a better understanding of the chain of infection and ways to break the chain and prevent infection.
Entry Requirements
The minimum age is 17 years. All learners must have a good standard of English.
Assessments/Examinations
Continuous assessment consists of a project and practical skills demonstrations.
Learners are required to complete 30 hours in a suitable care setting such as a Nursing Home or Hospital, where theoretical skills gained as part of their studies are put into practice. This affords learners the opportunity to reflect on their knowledge and understanding.
Learners may need to complete Patient Manual Handling Training & Cardiac/Basic First Aid Training before completing their work placement which is not provided by Progressive College.
Garda Vetting
Garda Vetting is a legal requirement under the National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts 2012 to 2016 for the vetting of persons carrying out work with children or vulnerable persons.
Students must complete the Garda Vetting process before commencing work placement.
Students who have spent more than 6 months living outside of Ireland will need to provide a copy of their Police Clearance Certification for all international addresses that they have lived at, before starting placement.
