Are you interested in becoming a Special Needs Assistant? The College of Progressive Education’s QQI Level 6 Minor Award Special Needs Assisting is a qualification that will allow you to work as a special needs assistant in a variety of settings. The purpose of this module is to equip the learner with the competence in the theory and practice underpinning the education and care of those who present with special educational needs. This SNA course aims to enable the learner to assist in the provision of this education and care. Learners are required to undertake 30 hours of work experience which will add value to their overall learning experience. This SNA Online Blended Course places focus on Irish legislation and educational options for children with additional needs.

The SNA Online Blended Course is completed through pre-recorded and live online webinars. Learners will have support through contact with their online blended learning tutor by phone and by email throughout the duration of the course. Upon completing this course, you will hold a QQI Level 6 Minor Award in Special Needs Assisting, allowing you to work as a special needs assistant.

This QQI Level 6 Special Needs Assistant Online Blended Course is designed to meet the training needs of those working or volunteering as a Special Needs Assistant. The course aims to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of the role of the Special Needs Assistant and promote good practice among those working in the school system.

Entry Requirements & Assessments

No prior skills, knowledge or competence in the award subject matter will be required of the learner for successful entry to the programme; but learners will be expected to have a minimum of Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate standard of education or equivalent and/or experience.  Proficiency in English language is required, together with a strong interest in (subject).
Learners whose first language is not English will be required to provide proof of proficiency in the English language through satisfactory performance on an internationally recognised test (e.g. IELTS 5.5) or other similar English Language qualifications.

Progressive College are committed to providing equal access to education and equal opportunities for mature students (23 years +).  Mature applicants do not need to match school-leavers in terms of academic achievement, provided there is evidence of the ability to pursue and benefit from the course, but candidates must be 23 years of age or over on the 1st January of the year of entry to their programme of study.  Mature students must also have proficiency in the English language.


You will be required to complete 30 hours of work experience. This will give you hands-on practical experience and enhance your overall learning experience. You will be required to secure your own work placement and to be garda vetted.

Course Content

On this QQI SNA Online Blended Course Level 6, you will learn about child development and behaviour theories and how a range of activities can promote physical, social, emotional and intellectual development in children with disabilities. You will learn how to implement Individual Education Plans (IEP's) and individual behaviour Plans (IBP's) and introduce exercises that teach the child to look after themselves and their property which ultimately encourages independence, respect, self-esteem and responsibility. You will develop the capacity to work and communicate effectively with parents, families, colleagues and other professionals to safeguard, support and promote children’s learning, development and well-being.
