Module Aims

Word Processing – 5N1358

The aim of this module is to provide the learner with a broad range of knowledge, skills and competencies in order to effectively use a word processing application. To enable the learner to work autonomously and under general direction in a variety of contexts, producing documents to a standard acceptable for mailing or publishing.

Text Production – 5N1422

The aim of this module is to provide the learner with a broad range of knowledge, skills and competencies in the area of text production.
To enable the learner to work autonomously and with others in an administration setting, producing documents to a very high standard, with a minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute.

Work Experience – 5N1356

The aim of this component is to provide the learner with the knowledge, skills, and competencies to prepare and plan for work, to understand working under direction in a specific vocational area and to review and evaluate that work. This component enables learners to develop work skills, evaluate employment opportunities and cope with changing work environments.

Payroll Manual & Computerised – 5N1546

This component aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills and competency necessary to enable them operate and maintain accurate payroll records, using manual and computerised systems for any organisation, irrespective of size. It will enable them to work under general direction, supervision or on their own initiative.

Information and Administration – 5N1389

The aim of this module is to provide the learner with a broad range of knowledge, skills and competencies in order to have an understanding of information processing within organisations and the processes, systems and methods employed by companies. To enable the learner to work effectively under supervision in a range of organisations.

Customer Service – 5N0972

The aim of the Customer Service module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to provide effective customer service within a work, social or voluntary environment, operating independently while under general supervision.

Bookkeeping Manual & Computerised – 5N1354

The Bookkeeping Manual and Computerised module will equip the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to produce and maintain accurate bookkeeping records for a range of organisations, using manual and computerised systems.

Customer Service – 5N0972

The aim of the Customer Service module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to provide effective customer service within a work, social or voluntary environment, operating independently while under general supervision.

Module Objectives

  • To provide the learner with a broad knowledge and clear understanding of the common uses and features of a typical word processing application and to have the learner develop a familiarity with the frequently used toolbar icons and drop-down menus available within the word processor.
  • To enable the learner to create a variety of documents applying a range of word processing features including text formatting and enhancements, paragraph formatting and document configuration.
  • To furnish the learner with experience of creating a variety of documents using word processing facilities including table manipulation, mail merge, track changes, use of styles and graphics.
  • To enable the learner to produce documents and labels of a very high standard ready for mailing or publishing, making use of proofing tools and methods to bring this about.
  • To furnish the learner with an understanding of a business working environment in terms of structure and the roles of various personnel within the organisation, as well as the equipment and resources typically available to the receptionist/ administrator and the impact of workplace legislation. To allow the learner to become familiar with IT infrastructure and its use in the office.
  • To furnish the learner with a range of skills appropriate to a company receptionist or office administrator.
  • To enable the learner to become familiar with the structure and creation of manual and computerised filing systems typically used by businesses.
  • To allow the learner to develop an understanding of variety of procedures which can be designed or applied to prevent unauthorised access to, or corruption of, records
  • To provide the learner with a clear understanding of the general rules of text production and to enable the learner to apply this knowledge to the production of a wide range of business documents to a standard ready for mailing or publishing.
  • To assist the learner in realising the importance of accuracy in text production and the potentially serious impacts of inaccuracy.  To furnish the learner with a range of techniques and tools to ensure a very high standard of accuracy, including the use of dictionaries and proofing tools.
  • To enable the learner to produce a range of business documents in common use, using word-processing formatting and configuration features, and produce such documents to a high standard, to include letters, reports, memos, emails, agendas, minutes, forms and invitations

  • To enable the learner to appreciate the advantages of computerised accounts and be aware of the various accounts packages available
  • To identify and appreciate the importance of data accuracy and confidentiality in financial transactions
  • To explore with the learner the essential and appropriate terminology associated with personal taxation
  • To facilitate the learner to develop an awareness of the skills necessary to use both manual and computerised payroll systems
  • To explore with the learner the importance of accuracy and security in preparing and maintaining payroll records
  • To facilitate the learner to develop the skill, knowledge and understanding of how to operate the cumulative, emergency and temporary tax system
  • To assist the learner in developing the academic and vocational language, literacy and numeracy skills related to Payroll through the medium of the indicative content 
  • To enable the learner to take responsibility for his/her own learning
  • To provide the learner with a broad knowledge and clear understanding of the common uses and features of a typical spreadsheet application and to have the learner develop a familiarity with the frequently used toolbar icons and drop-down menus available within the application.
  • To enable the learner to create a variety of spreadsheets, applying a range of features involving data and cell formatting.
  • To furnish the learner with experience of using macros, graphs and other advanced spreadsheet features including cell references, IF statements and functions such as statistical, financial, date and time.
